J0095. Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois all were behind them before Jane felt safe enough to use the sleeper while he drove. Before that she would doze in the passenger seat, and sometimes when he woke in the middle of the night he saw her there, awake, smoking a cigarette and staring out the windows.
"Poor kid," he thought to himself, before checking his mirrors to see no familiar cars behind.
